Our Story
The name Boucan comes from a cocoa and clove drying and processing warehouse on the Plaisance Estate in the parish of Gouyave, St John, which is owned by our dearly departed businessman/venture capitalist extraordinaire, Lenny A. Purcell (founder, owner and CEO of parent company, L.A. Purcell).
What began as a casual conversation, over drinks at a cocktail event in the early sixties with a gentleman from South Africa who went by the name of Mr. Winslow, morphed into an offer to Mr. Purcell by Mr. Winslow to sell Plaisance Estate, an offer that Mr. Purcell, a savvy and enterprising businessman, pounced on.
Not allowing the moment and opportunity to slip away, Mr. Purcell ushered Mr. Winslow into an adjoining room at the function for privacy, and right there and then, with no arm-twisting necessary, proceeded to submit a check as down-payment to a formal agreement.
This single transaction, consummated within hours, was a game changer in L.A. Purcell’s business accomplishments. Cocoa still is, as it was then, a significant driver in the export market. The moral of the story is that one should be prepared when opportunity comes knocking.
